Biopics are almost always interesting and commercially successful as millions of fans want to see the journey of their favorite stars. Over the years they have become quite common and the recently announced biopic of Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones is just one of many examples. Musical biopics have mushroomed lately as studios around the globe work to chronicle the lives of music icons. Films based on Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin are currently in development and are all set to release in 2021 and beyond. Today we look at some of the music biopics that the fans can expect to see in the coming years.
‘Respect’ – Aretha Franklin
Beginning her career as a child, Aretha Franklin used to sing the gospel at a Baptist church in Detroit. She was an American singer-songwriter, civil rights activist, pianist, and actress. Aretha was born in 1918 and lived most of her life in a racially discriminatory world. But all the challenges she faced only made her stronger and she went on to fight for the rights of the oppressed and downtrodden. Jennifer Hudson is all set to play the role of the late actress in her biopic. Directed by Liesl Tommy, the movie Respect will hit the theaters on August 13, 2021. It will try to capture Aretha Franklin’s struggles as her singing career rose from her father’s church choir to the international stage.
‘Elvis’ – Elvis Presley
Widely regarded as the “King of Rock and Roll”, Presley needs no introduction. The American icon’s biopic ‘Elvis’, will be released in November this year. Austin Butler is going to play the role of Elvis Presley while Tom Hanks will portray Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager. The biopic is going to cover Presley’s two-decade-long career and his relationship with his manager. The script of the movie was penned by Director Baz Luhrmann with Craig Pearce. Rufus Sewell, Yola, and Olivia DeJonge are also rumored to star in the movie.
‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ – Whitney Houston
With over 200 million records sold worldwide, Whitney Houston was well on his way to become the greatest musicians the world has ever seen. However, her premature death at 49 due to accidental drowning came as a big shock for the music world. After more than 8 years of her death, it has been announced that her biopic will be released on Thanksgiving in 2022. Naomi Ackie is all set to play the late star Whitney Houston in ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’.
‘Maestro’ – Leonard Bernstein
Born in 1918, Leonard Bernstein was an American composer, music educator, humanitarian, and pianist. He is regarded as one of the most influential American cultural personalities of the last century. His biopic ‘Maestro’ will be directed, co-written, produced, and co-starred by Bradley Cooper. Bernstein was a very respected composer who was behind musical hits like West Side Story. His biopic will span over 30 years of Bernstein’s life and will be primarily focused on his relationship with Felicia Montealegre, his wife.
‘Madonna’ – Madonna
The “Queen of Pop,” Madonna is a world-renowned singer, actress, and songwriter. She has been one of the most influential figures in popular culture in the last few decades. Her versatility in music and continued reinvention revolutionized the music industry. She will herself direct her biopic in which she is going to be co-writing with Diablo Cody. Madonna is dedicated to creating a captivating biopic that captures her journey as a dancer, artist, musician, and human being.
Most of these biopics are worth watching out for as the cast of every one of them looks interesting. The fans will get a chance to finally know more about their favorite stars as their biopics hit theaters in the coming years.
