Malcolm & Marie, now a Netflix product, has entered the Oscar race. In September, the film, which debuted at multiple film festivals, starred John David Washington and Zendaya in the leading roles.
The date of the film’s premiere on Netflix has been set to February the 5th, 2020. The film relayed the story of a film director (played by John David Washington) and his partner (played by Zendaya), whose relationship gets thrown into a penetrating spotlight right after they return home after watching the premiere of one of his projects. The relationship struggles to survive as the couple awaits the response of the critics.
Before the deadline date of November the 20th, 2020 for SAG Awards submission even arrived, the decision to release John David Washington and Zendaya starrer “Malcolm & Marie” was already made. The decision was made keeping in mind that the impressive two-hander should enter the current award season.

Netflix has owned the film’s rights because of a deal they had cracked in September, which saw the streaming giant owning the film’s worldwide streaming rights for $30 million. It had defeated big players like Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, HBO Max in the bidding war.
Now the streaming service is planning to unveil the movie on its platform, which they will do on February the 5th, 2020, which would kick start its Oscar campaign for the 2020-21 season.

The film was directed by Sam Levinson and was shot with a 35 mm celluloid camera over the course of a few months at a Caterpillar House (Feldman Architecture) in Carmel, California. Levinson had a limited crew because the world was in lockdown during those months. Levinson and everyone involved should be adulated for ensuring that the working atmosphere was in good accordance with all the guidelines and the protocols. This helped for the smooth running of the production and ensured no one got sick during the production.
Levinson was the prime producer of the project, while the stars of the film John David Washington and Zendaya, were the executive producers. Kid Cudi, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer were the other executive producers.
Zendaya has a great history of working with Levinson. She has previously acted in Euphoria (also helmed by Levinson), for which she also bagged an Emmy award in the Best Actress in the drama series category.
Sam Levinson has also produced a film, “Pieces of a Woman,” under the banner of the production company, which he runs alongside his dad Barry Levinson and Kevin Turen. The film “Pieces of a Woman” saw Vanessa Kirby in her performance of a lifetime, and it is being regarded as another Netflix owned Academy Award hopeful.
Meanwhile, John David Washington is living through the best time of his career as he has starred in two high profile projects recently, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and “BlacKkKlansman” (which also starred Chadwick Boseman).
