Netflix recently released a new film, Holidate, on 28 October 2020. The film is a romantic comedy holiday movie.
John Whitesell’s Christmas movie Holidate centers around two characters Jackson and Sloane, who hate holidays. However, they have to spend their holidays with their awkward family members and clingy dates. When these two meets, they promise each other to be the plus-ones for the holiday celebration.
The movie’s screenplay is written by Tiffany Paulsen and stars Luke Bracey, Emma Roberts, Jake Manley, Jessica Capshaw, Andrew Bachelor, Kristin Chenoweth, and Manish Dayal. Roberts played the lead character of Sloane, and Bracey is in the role of handsome stranger Jackson.
The movie starts with Robert’s character, Sloane, as she arrives at her mother’s home to celebrate Christmas. The place is colorfully decorated for the Christmas celebration, ugly sweaters get-ups, and she encounters the very loud buzz of gathering. As she enters, her mother (played by Frances Fisher) starts bawling out about her singleton, an “aww, so sorry” from her sister Abby (played by Jessica Capshaw) and “too soon for a fiancee” from the younger brother (played by Cynthy Wu).
On the other hand, Bracey’s character, Jackson, agrees to a fake date and goes to the woman’s parents’ home. When they reach there, her parents greet them at the front door. Soon the date realizes that their intentions do not match, the film announces its R-rated intentions.
Jackson and Sloane’s first unreal date go pretty well, and they also spend Valentine’s Day together. And they start to spend more time together than the actual festival holiday. However, their agreement is not like friends with benefits; it is more a passionless arrangement. This type of storytelling is famous for decades, and audiences know where these two are leading to. The building of slow fondness has more tug. It also shows that starting a relationship with no desperate desire to be someone enables creating the right emotional space between people.
Roberts is a singer and actress known for her lead role as Addie Singer in a TV series, Unfabulous on Nickelodeon. She featured in films like Scream 4, American Horror Story, Nerve, Palo Alto, 4.3.2.1, and many more. And our handsome stranger, Bracey, is famous for the movies he appeared in like G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Monte Carlo, The November, Point Break, Hacksaw, etc.
Rom-coms are one of the favorite genres among audiences, and the screenwriters created some lovable two characters. However, except for a few good nuances, the best screenplay is adapted from other classic rom-com films. It portrays Jackson and Sloane’s characters moving their feet in a musical sequence just like Ryan Gosling’s Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing from the movie Crazy Stupid Love.
Romantic comedies have been a crowd-pleaser since Shakespeare’s time, and there are many beautiful films in this genre ahead of the happily-ever-after formula. Holidate tries to give a wink to the genre but let’s face it; the film fails terribly. The movie is unrealistic and does not stand out from other movies in the genre. Films like My Best Friend’s Wedding and Notting Hill would be considered documentaries alongside this one.
The chemistry between Jackson and Sloane starts with a Holidate agreement of no-sex, no-romance holiday buddies, which obviously fails at the end and hence does not make any sense in the first place.
The film is filled with uncomfortable, weird sequences. To start with our protagonist of the film, Sloane is a so-called cool woman, who grunts phrases like “Don’t be such a pussy!” and when a guy says to her that “your tits look exceptional in the dress,” Sloane embraces the objectification. The close gatherings create an unintentional prick to the viewers during the social distancing and lockdown period. Holidate is a cynical movie that would not change your mind about romantic comedies, nor will it serve something unique to your plates.
In the supporting cast, Manish Dayal, as Farook, lends amazing support to the plot and helps the story grow further. Overall, the movie is a one-time watch film, you might not love the concept, but it will give you a good timepass.
