Nobody Knows When “Tomb Raider 2” is Going to Come Out

 The film was about to be released in early 2021, but it has now been delayed indefinitely. It did have a tentative release date in March of next year, but it has been moved forward with dark clouds of uncertainty hanging over its head.

Alicia Vikander’s highly anticipated return as Lara Croft in the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Tomb Raider now has a long wait gaping in front of it as MGM has refused to release the film in March 2021. Alicia Vikander had stepped into Angelina Jolie’s shoes and starred in the 2018 film years after Jolie’s iteration of the fan-favorite character.

Not many films have been made based on the highly successful video game. Still, Vikander’s iteration was appreciated by critics and fans alike, and the popularity eventually compelled the producers to consider its sequel.

Despite an average box office performance ($276 million worldwide), the film was a critical success and managed to capture some fans’ hearts from the gaming fraternity. The film had intentionally left a door open for a possible sequel, and noteworthy developments had taken place in 2019. However, everything fell apart after March 2020.

There was hardly anyone who had any complaints with Vikander’s portrayal despite the fact that there was someone called Angelina Jolie in the comparison. Alicia Vikander ably portrayed Lara Croft and showed that she has the virtuosity to lead a franchise like Tomb Raider. MGM had announced some months back saying that the sequel is definitely on the cards and said that the producers have already signed Ben Wheatley to helm the project.

Tomb Raider 2 was one of the projects that got severely impacted by the imposed lockdown in March, and while some have already taken the route of OTT platforms, producers of Tomb Raider are patient. Nevertheless, after the news of the indefinite delay came out, many fans started engaging in an apprehensive discussion about its future on Reddit.

The Wrap has confirmed the report that the second film in the new Tomb Raider franchise has been taken off for a while up until any further notification. The film was expected to reach cinemas in March ’21 under normal circumstances. However, we are almost reaching the end of the year, and the production has not even started. When writing this, the film still does not even have a production commencement date, thus further fuelling the apprehensions among fans.

Alicia Vikander is still pretty optimistic and hopes that the film should begin its production operations in 2021. Well, regardless of anybody’s optimism, the film is unlikely to arrive before 2022. If everything remains alright, the film can go into production sometime next year; otherwise, it seems unlikely that the film has any hope before January 2022. One thing is for sure, though, the producers have no mood to release it on a streaming service.

Meanwhile, we can hope that Ben Wheatley and his team can work on the aspects that did not work for the first film so that whenever the film comes out, it should prove that the franchise is here to stay.
